Unique Natural Sights

Covering an area of 9.6 million square kilometres, China is a vast country rich in tourism resources, ranging from mighty mountains, picturesque rivers, precipitous gorges and comfortable seacoasts, to varied landforms, magnificent canyons, boundless deserts, and spacious grasslands. Almost all natural attractions in China are beyond description, and include the beauty elements, beautiful in shape, in colour, in sound, in scent, in symbol and in dynamic states. Some unique natural sights are designated as World Cultural Heritage. In the face of them, travelers will be greatly shocked at the amazing natural scenery and profound culture.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Located on the Futou Mountain 10 km north of downtown Chengdu, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is one of China's most important refuges for endangered wildlife. Established in 1987, the Base has been being a nonprofit organization specializing in protecting, researching and breeding of rare wild animals, especially giant pandas, one of the commonly recognized national treasures of China.

At the very beginning, pandas in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding had only six giant pandas rescued from the open country. For the next 21 years, the Base caught no wild pandas from the wild and the number of pandas there had reproduced up to 83 including the original six. Meanwhile, the Base has been exchanging experience with other giant panda organizations and providing them with relevant technical support.

With the completion of the extension project, the area of Chengdu Research of Giant Panda Breeding has been enlarged from 1,060,000 square meters to be 2,000,000 square meters, where is covered with rich vegetation and giant pandas, lesser pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks, white swans, black swans, wild gooses, mandarin ducks, peacocks, golden monkey and some other endangered animals are fed.

Jiuzhaigou National Park

Inscribed as World Heritage Site and World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, Jiuzhaigou Valley enjoys its great reputation all over the world. It is a part of Nanping County, in the Aba Tibetan Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, and about 330 km away from the provincial capital of Chengdu City. The name "Jiuzhaigou Valley" comes from mandarin which means "Valley of Nine Villages". Being covered by 52% natural forest, the Valley spans an area of more than 600 square kilometers. Due to the humid climate with an elevation of more than 3000 meters, Jiuzhaigou National Park, which is known as Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area, has a large variety of flora and fauna, including 2,976 plant species, 141 bird species, 170 vertebrates species and 17 species of rare animals.

Visitors have excellent opportunities for viewing rare and precious wildlife and plants, such as, giant pandas, Chinese golden monkeys and takins. The high-altitude karsts are formed by glacial, tectonic and hydrological activities for thousands of years, and create more than 100 green, sapphire and turquoise-colored lakes. Spectacular mountains, colorful forest, fabulous lakes, stunning waterfalls and unique Tibetan ethnic are made up of a heaven, which becomes one of the most popular international travel destinations and one of China's must see destinations. Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park draw more than 200,000 visitors annually. This fairyland remotes from the outside world for centuries until some lumberjack broke in by accident in 1970s. The area gains great fame since it was discovered. Named as Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area, it was classified as "the first Key Scenic Districts of China" in 1982 and was bestowed as "forty Best Scenic Districts of China" and ranks first in New Nature Scenic Districts of China in1990.It also enjoy the worldwide popularity. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated this area as "World Heritage Site" in 1992 and "World Biosphere Reserve" in 1997. The Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park is the only one scenic spot who wins two international titles in China so far.

Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces

Known to the world as an essential part of Guilin highlight tours, Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces, or Longji Rice Terraces in Chinese, is also called Longsheng Rice Terraces because of its location in Longsheng County of Guilin. Assarted since Dynasty (1279-1368) and completed at the beginning of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the terraces scatter at an altitude between 300 and 1100 meters at a maximum gradient of 50 degrees, creating a tremendous scenic area of some 66 square kilometers. Stretching across the Longji Village, Ping'an Village, Zhongliu Village, Dazhai Village, Tiantou Village, Xiaozhai Village, etc, the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces demonstrate distinct colorful beauties in four seasons. Considering of the beauty of terraced fields only, the Jinkeng Rice Terraces and the Xiaozhai Rice Terraces in and around the Dazhai Village are commonly seen as the "second to none"; another highlight named "Seven Stars Accompany the Moon" is located at the Ping'an Village.

Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) Scenic Area

Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area, located in the Huanglong Village, Songpan County, Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, covering an area of 40,000 hectares, is 56 kilometres away from the Songpan County in the west, 122 kilometres away from the Pingwu County in the east. Lying at the foot of Mountain Xuebaoding, it consists of two parts, Huanglong and Muni Valley. The former includes Huanglong Valley, Danyun Gorge and Xuebaoding scenic areas, while the latter includes Zhaga Waterfall and Erdaohai Lake scenic areas. The main feature of this attraction is travertine surface. Seen from afar, it looks like a giant dragon stretching from the south to the north and resting in the bosom of glaciers. Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) Scenic Area, named after the remarkable Buddhist temple – Huanglong Temple, and renowned for colorful cascade pools, snow mountains, gorges and forests, is the only well-protected highland wet land. Some rare animals on the verge of extinction can also be found. In the year of 1992, it was designated as the World Natural Heritage by UNESCO. To a large extent, Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area is not only the treasure of Chinese people but also the world as a whole.

Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas

This spot is especially famous for its daedal alpine topographies with a total area of 1,700,000 hectares. The three rivers referring to the Jinsha, Lancang and Nujiang rivers, originate from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and they flow abreast southward from the Hengduan Mountains, northwest of Yunnan, with a closet distance of only 66.3 kilometers. Since this spot is in the junction of Southeast Asia, South Asia and Tibetan Plateau, the Three Parallel Rivers area is a rare representative district with alpine topographies and its geomorphic evolution. Moreover, there are diversified creatures in this area. The area almost has all kinds of landscapes included in Northern Hemisphere, really an imposing and majestic sight. It was put on the List of World Heritages by UNESCO in 2003.
